How much does the database cost?

The Standard Database costs $1,000 and includes over 4,000 active North American franchisors and a single contact and email address.

The Custom Contact includes the same 4,000+ franchisors, but also includes an additional 26,000+ key executives and their titles. The cost is $1,500. Click here for a sample Spreadsheet database and click here for a sample Profile database.

How much are database updates?

Database updates are $100 times the number of months since the original purchase date or the date of the most recent update. If you purchased the database 6 months ago, the cost of the update would be $600.

How many new franchisors are added and deleted each year?

Our experience is that 500 – 600 new franchisors are added to the database each year. A similar number are deleted from the database because if it is unclear if they are still actively franchising.

How many contacts are listed in the franchisor database for each company?

The Database includes over 30,000 key executive contacts and their titles. 90% of contacts are extracted from 2017 – 2019 Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDDs) and each is verified in the database in those years. Depending upon the size of the company, there may be between 1 and 30 contacts listed in an annual FDD. Regardless of the “importance” of the contact, we try to add all contacts noted in the FDD.

So that our database clients can contact the proper decision makers within each franchise system, we note the senior executives that we are aware of at any point in time. Contacts are listed as either: 1) Presidents, CEOs, Founders, etc. are designated with a 1 in Column I. 2) The other key officers and contacts are designated with a 1 in Column H. For those contacts who we have identified as active in 2019, there is a 1 in Column K - “2019 Verify.” The Primary Contact for the company is in Column G. This is the contact that the Franchisor prefers that third parties use.

Are email addresses included in the database?

Because of the FCC's CAN-SPAM Rules, we are precluded from providing more than a single email address for each company. This is usually the direct email address for the preferred contact person for franchising. In many companies, especially for smaller franchise systems, the contact person may also be the president. In maybe 20% of the cases, the email address provided is generic — e.g. franchising@XYZ.com or info@ABC.com.

Do you have the email addresses for contacts that are not provided as part of the database?

Yes, we have email addresses for the majority of contacts listed in the database. We use these email addresses through the FranBlast Program. The FranBlast Program uses a client’s text and graphics, our email list and a third party that specializes in getting the maximum number of emails through to the intended receiver. The cost of the Program is solely a function of the number of emails that actually get through. Clients do not have access to the actual email addresses.

Are international franchisors included in the database?

The database includes only active North American franchisors and does not include franchisors headquartered outside the USA or Canada. Because only a fraction of Canadian franchisors submit an FDD, the extent of the profile information for the non-FDD Canadian franchisors is limited. Canadian franchisors make up less than 20% of the companies listed.

How often is the database updated? How accurate is the database?

What are the limitations to using the database?

You have unlimited use of the database as long as you want. There is no obligation to purchase updates. Our experience is that franchisors change their headquarters address every 5 years and the email address provided for the Lead Contact (and email address) changes every 3 years.

Although anyone within your company is permitted access to the database, it is incumbent upon the client to ensure that the terms of the Rental Agreement are followed.

The only limitation regarding usage is that you are prohibited from misusing the data (see Rental Agreement) and you agree not to make the data available to third parties (the database includes roughly 10 “dummy” companies and contacts so that we can tell if the database is being misused).

Do you provide a rebate for inaccurate mailing or email addresses?

While we guarantee the accuracy of the mailing addresses ($1.00 rebate for each returned mailing), we do not guarantee the accuracy of the email addresses. Whereas we might generate 100 bounced email addresses from an email blast of 10,000 recipients (~ 1%), we have found that the number of inaccurate emails is often a function of the lag time between when the database is purchased and when the email blast is sent out, as well as how the email is sent and the software used. Accordingly, a client’s bounce rate might be substantially higher than might otherwise be the case using state-of-the-art email blast technology.

How is the industry category determined for each franchisor?

So that clients can better determine a franchisor’s primary competitors, we have segmented all companies as follows:

  1. Primary Category – Food, Lodging, Retail and Service.
  2. Secondary Categories (28 categories).
  3. Industry Subsectors (over 240 subsectors).
  4. In some cases, a company might prefer to be listed in more than one industry group. For the most part, however, we feel that most companies are listed in a category that most accurately reflects what they do.

Any Recommendations on Email Blasts

For many years, we used the most popular email marketing software provider to send out our emails. Using this popular software, however, often resulted in as many as 600 bounces out of approximately 10,000 unique email addresses. Because of our ongoing efforts to maintain the accuracy of the database, we knew, however, that many of the email addresses that had bounced were in fact current and active email addresses. We subsequently switched to another email marketing firm (Vidi Emi) that has reduced the number of bounces to 200 or less for an email blast of nearly 10,000 unique email addresses. While their services are more expensive than that of the most popular email marketing software provider we were using, our throughput of emails and the on-going design assistance we receive from them more than justifies the modest incremental expense.

Primarily through an internet search, we do our best to eliminate companies that are no longer actively franchising. Similarly, since we are in constant contact with the franchising industry, we are generally privy to new franchisors. Over 500 new franchisors have been added to the database in the past 12 months.
